Free camera acting class: how to act in front of the camera
On stage your voice must reach the last row; on camera even the smallest thought shows. You can learn these camera-acting rules at home with your phone, for free.
Understand shot sizes
- Wide shot: the whole body shows, so walk and body language matter.
- Mid shot: waist up, hands and face both work.
- Close-up: only the face; thought shows through the eyes, not big expressions.
Eyes and eyelines
Don't look into the lens unless the director asks. Keep your gaze on one of your partner's eyes and cut down on blinking and wandering eyes. In a close-up, your eyes are your whole performance.
Continuity
A scene is shot many times from many angles. If you picked up the cup on a line, pick it up on that same line in every take. This habit makes editors and directors love you.
Free practice at home
- Put the phone at eye level with window light in front of you.
- Record a short line in a wide, mid and close-up.
- Watch all three: what felt too much in the close-up? Reduce it.
- Repeat the same scene in three takes and check continuity.
