How to prepare for an audition: full checklist
Most auditions are lost not to lack of talent but to lack of preparation. This checklist works for film, web series, ads and Bhojpuri auditions alike.
Before the audition
- Read the whole scene, not just your lines.
- Understand what the character wants in the scene and what stops them.
- Learn the lines well enough to listen to your partner.
- Wear simple clothes that suggest the character, not a costume.
- Record two or three takes on your phone and review them.
On the day
- Arrive early with your photos and profile.
- Say the slate (name, height, city) clearly and confidently.
- When given direction, show the change immediately; that is the real test.
- If you slip, don't stop to apologise; stay in the scene.
Self-tape auditions
- Phone horizontal (landscape), at eye level.
- Light on your face from the front, a plain wall behind.
- Clean sound; pick a quiet room.
- Your reader sits right next to the camera.
After the audition
Give the audition and let it go; prepare for the next one. Note the date, role and lesson of each audition in a diary. If someone asks for money to confirm a role, walk away.
